Lack of data standards in functional ecology inhibits the most efficient use of long-term observational data. Such data standards however, would be accepted by the whole community if they reflect the opinion and experience of the majority. Here we propose an approach to this problem that is based on models, which integrate web of data resources to guide a community of experts in the collaborative and joint construction of a generally accepted thesaurus. Our practical approach is based on the design of a vocabulary that is dedicated to functional traits in plants. Once the thesaurus has been stabilized, it will be mobilized on the web of data, with the expectation that this approach will lead to a domain ontology in functional ecology.
