Cardanol-modified alkyd resins: novel route to make greener alkyd coatings

Abstract : Novel alkyd resins have been synthetized with mono-and di-functional cardanol monomers. This study has demonstrated that those monomers could replace some of the monomers used in alkyd resins, which were petrosourced. Indeed, the renewable carbon content have been increased by up to 12 %. The film properties (gloss, adhesion, drying time) have been investigated and the results showed that the introduction of cardanol monomers did not impact the coatings properties except for the color. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis has demonstrated that cardanol highly increased the thermal stability of alkyd resins.
